In September 2023 I took on a huge challenge; climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
It was one of the hardest but equally most rewarding challenges I have ever taken on. Along with my new found friends and co-climbers we not only traversed some of the hardest terrain, altitude and weather, we also navigated the huge barrier of our minds.
You can read the real-life stories from some of the climbers in our co-author book “Memories from the Mountain” available at https://amzn.to/3zRVhvn but in this article I want to share with you FIVE lessons applicable to life and business I learned whilst on the world’s highest freestanding mountain.
1. You don’t always have to be the best at doing something – it really isn’t always about winning or the outcome. It is about having the courage to trust the process and be the best contribution you can be to your own and collective goals.
2. You don’t have to have the same motivation as others – we all do better and go further when our motivation is intrinsic (it’s internally fuelled and personal to us) rather than extrinsic (being fuelled by outcomes and prizes).
3. You don’t have to have all the answers and know exactly where you’re heading – get comfortable with curiosity and discovery and trust your gut. Your intuition will always lead you to either your next success or your next lesson and both are equally as important for growth and satisfaction.
4. Be open, humble and authentically and unapologetically you – through continual self-kindness allow your confidence to grow to align your actions and your core values. When we act from a place of gratitude, kindness and self-belief based on our personal values we are not only more satisfied and successful, we are happier.
5. You need to trust in yourself and others, without judgement – be kind to yourself (and others), believe in yourself (and others), set self-judgement and FOPO (fear of people’s opinions) aside. Other people’s opinions are not your concern.
Progress is progress and when you slowly move forwards (or Pole, Pole as they say on Kilimanjaro) and you do your best this is the right path and direction. Trust the process and remember progress is never linear.
We can only do what we know until we learn and know better… then we try to be better.
That’s how you PERFORM at YOUR best.
